My Daughter Might Hate Me...Oh Well

Last Tuesday I was at a high school basketball game and I was shocked at the "tightness" of the girls clothing. I was also surprised by the fact that high school cheerleaders are now more naked than we were back when I was a cheerleader. What's with the tight mini-skirts? When did pleated skirts go out of style? They seemed a bit...longer in my day.  It was then that I realized (and tweeted) I will probably NOT be a cool mom. You know the cool mom that let's you wear whatever you want. Stay out late and let your friends call her by her first name. Naw that probably won't be me. After hearing news of Frayser High School in Memphis with their epic amount of teen pregnancies (90) it's official that if I have a daughter she will probably have to wear really old clothes that cover her entire body. Prude am I? Maybe but wow. The clothes and makeup that I saw at the high school game I don't remember seeing in my own age group until college. I grew up during the Cross Colors, Karl Kani, Grunge era so to say I was covered is an understatement. We wore flannel shirts, overalls, loose jeans, etc. Now everyone is trying to look like Snooki. I saw pictures of a friend's daughter who went on a co-ed school trip. She's 13 and wore a bikini. I also chatted with a friend from church who has teenage boys and the lack of clothing and parental supervision is at an all time low at house parties. Wait what? What do you think is leading to the lack of modesty? Is it television? Is it music? Is it lenient parents? I'm just going to apologize to my daughter now..."sorry dear but you can't wear that".

  1. Haha I feel you BUT you gotta realize people have bemoaned "what girls are wearing these days" for decades!!! I think it's cyclical and believe it or not there is a generation of young ladies about to grow up who looks at the Snooki archetype as gross, not glorious (I hope ;)

  2. As a mother to a 10 year old girl, I agree with you completely. Especially at this time when these girls are filling out in areas that will get looks from men...unwanted looks.

I stopped letting her wear bikinis when she was like 4. At that age, it's kinda cute and people still know that they are young. At 8 she was wearing a one piece. Now, I'd probably let her wear the tankini 2-piece (the top comes down long).

Your daughter may hate you but at least she'll be protected and as a mother, that's what you want for your kids, for them to be safe and protected.

  3. In addition to what you referenced, I think part of it is that adults are so busy with work and other aspects of their lives that it's made it difficult to keep track of their kids.

  4. Trust me, you won't be the only prudish mother, lol. Some of the things that younger girls are wearing now, I wouldn't be comfortable wearing. And I think I'm in the age group that should be half naked!
