So I have a confession. I absolutely hate octopuses (yes that's correct). I hate how they look. I hate how they move and I hate when I am watching a shark show on Discovery and one comes bouncing into the screen. YUCK! Since my friend and I had plans to go to an aquarium this weekend I wanted to try a little immersion therapy to get over these creatures. I hate having fears since at the moment I only have three fears: 1. Dying 2. Someone close to me dying and 3. GROSS OCTOPUS! I feel that this fear is irrational and I wanted to get over it. Last night a show came on called Amazing Octopus so I watched it. I was frozen in my bed for 60 minutes. I could not change the channel. I could not keep watching. I couldn't move. I hate how they look and I was totally grossed out. A scientist captured a female octopus and dropped it into a tank of water. It climb out of the tank and jumped over the side of the boat back into the ocean. I was paralyzed at this point. Later in the evening I watched a show about Greek Islands and guess what the host caught and ate- an octopus. When I finally got done watching the show I looked up these nasty things online to try to read about them so maybe I could calm down about them. The more I read the more repulsed I got. There's even one species that can kill a human. *I see you blue ringed octopus* They swim with their big gigantic heads. They get out of their tanks. I just HATE them. I know some people who have animal fears for good reason. My mom has a super duper phobia of snakes. Can't look at them, talk about them, anything. When I was a child I had to tear snake pics out of magazines for her. One cousin is deathly afraid of cats. I know many people afraid of dogs. Here's the difference- those are air breathing, land dwelling animals that could be near you, and bite you. I am not afraid of sharks because I am NEVER around them. Why am I afraid of these animals that I only see on TV and in aquariums? Most of them can't kill me. What are you afraid of? Is it death, animals, failure? Let me know!
I had a fear of snakes and now I own one. I really don't know what it was.. I think just the fear of one biting me, but I forced myself to own one and now the fear is just gone... almost like I "outgrew" it.
Invertebrates freak me out. I need things to have a spine and a skeletal structure! They don't terrify me to the point that I run screaming from the room, but if I can avoid them I do.
